Subject: Re: valley truss rod questions regarding extending spans

Assuming that the same material is used in the truss rods the larger rods would be ~17% stronger. The only time I have seen a truss rod failure in a pivot has been due to wind, never due to normal loading. I have never extended a Valley pivot span as you have described but knowing my experience with pivots if I tried it the pivot would be in a tangled heap on a 100 degree day in mid August when I need it most. I guess with that in mind considering how important timing can be with water if it was me I would just spend the $ up front to do it right knowing the many thousands of $'s it could cost me if it fails when needed most.
