Subject: RE: " GMO" Wheat

North Central Kansas
Tiler: there is no GMO wheat on the market right now. None. There is research being done by universities and private companies around the world into GM wheat - but there has been none released to farmers, for a number of reasons - including the concerns about public acceptance of GM wheat foods, and that there is no true benefit to GM wheat, at this time. Wheat varieties take a decade or more to develop, so it would take a lot of time and red tape to get GM wheat released to the public. It will happen, but it will be a while.
Having said all that, there is a huge backlash against wheat and wheat foods right now, to "gluten intolerance" claims and fads. There is a disease called celiac disease that is a huge problem for those who have it...it means they cannot digest wheat gluten. But there is a huge segment of the population that claims a "wheat-free" diet has helped them lose weight, reduce aches and pains and all kinds of other things. It's a challenge to the wheat industry to overcome these claims, many of which have no scientific backing.
My two cents...and in full disclosure, I work for the Kansas Wheat Commission.
