Our wet leg is 7500 bph,  good corn within 2.5 miles a 30' corn head, cart, one guy with 3 semi's can keep up.   Add the other 8 row combine with cart, trucks will wait to dump, and combines will start to sit after an hour or so. In this last scenerio, a pit would be useless.  A larger leg is on the want list.

A pit is never useless.

You don't need a large pit in that scenario but a pit large enough to keep the leg full while trucks are moving on/off the dump gains a considerable amount of grain elevated in a days time.

The local elevator here put up a big new leg a couple yrs ago with no pit, just a drag conveyor.      By my estimation not having a pit gives up at a minimum 20% of the legs capacity by letting it run empty between trucks and switching hoppers.
