Subject: Re: 20" Corn in NC

I don't have any experiance with southern 20" corn as I'm in Ontario, but we have been 20" for over 15 years and I've read every study and opinion on 20" I can find. There are lots of theories most everyone agrees with the weed shading as the light inception is slightly higher than 30" at the same growth stage. Also roots will fill the rows faster too, but the moisture conservation is controversial some theories say that with higher light inception you loose more water through the plant pulling water out of the ground and perspiring it off than 30" rows. With 30" rows more sun is hitting the ground which may not loose as much water if the top of the soil is dry. But were talking very small percentages and depending on different scenarios 30's could be better. From my research I'm convinced that south of the 43'rd latitude until your pushing pops above 36,000 the only advantage 20" has is the equipment advantage you are talking about.
