Trying to hook up a gps antenna to my PF3000. Will only plug into port 1, but port 1 has tag that says only to use that port with special cable to hook up to a pc. Book says to hook antenna to a "receiver box" and then hook receiver to port 1. Do the newer antennas hook directly to port 1? Want to yield map.

Some GPS systems consist of two parts, an Antenna and an assoicated receiver in the cab. Other GPS systms are referred to as "Smart Antennas". The Smart Antenna contains an antenna and also the associated electronics. The way to tell the difference is that if the cable leading to the outside enclosure is a CoAx type (like TV hookups) then it does need an additonal box (GPS engine) inside the cab. If the connection contains a 9 pin type connector then you have a Smart Antenna.

Port 1 is what would be used for connecting to a GPS receiver system. The warning on Port 1 refers to the fact that 12V power and ground are available on that port for powering up a GPS system. Most of the time that is good in that if the proper equipment is used with the PF3000 then there is no other connection needed. Other times this could be bad as this 12V out can cause damage.

For example, if you should purchase an Ag Leader 1500 GPS, you would just plug it in and it would be ready to use.

Other GPS systems can be used but need to have the proper wiring. Most any GPS system can be made to work with the PF3000 but this often requires a knowledge of the cabling and programming of the GPS to make it communicate properly. Farmers are often reluctant to wade through these issues.

We often sell the Raven Model 50 GPS for this type of situation. We make up the cable to allow the Raven to be connected to the PF3000 as well as other Ag Leader displays.

Electronic Supply houses have cheap GPS systems that may be wired and programmed to work with the PF3000. These are probably fine for a combine situation but probably not good enough for other tasks that require more precision.
