NW Iowa | I would vote for variable rate fertilizer and grid sampling. It's sometimes hard to do one without the other. I VR'd my fert this year and I probably saved 50% on cost. We don't have a spreader, but I sent my prescription to the fert guys and they took care of the rest.
Soil sampling takes time, but when I get to do it, I know that what I'm sending in is what I want sent in. No clue if the guys I hire to come out and do the sampling are pulling representitive samples or not. I figured it would cost me around $4.50/acre to grid mine in 2.5 acre grids. This was just the cost of samples, no time since mine isn't worth much. I previously paid $9.50 to have it done. You will also need to add in the cost of any software to deal with the sample data, but I assume that you have something you are using since you are incorporating yield data and soil information. | |
