I think the biggest concern is when the battery is getting poor. When in sleep mode, the computer is supposed to monitor when the battery has become drained. With a certain percentage left, it is supposed to automatically kick into hibernate mode. If the battery is dying (due to age normally), it might not have enough to fully enter hibernate mode. Corruption is an option then.
