Has anybody that has planted soybeans into standing rye noticed what i found yesterday. The following pictures were taken of a field that had been planted to soybeans into a living standing rye cover crop on 6/2. The previous year it was rye that was harvested for grain and needless to say it had volunteered. There was a little cheat grass in the mix. On 6/4 the field was sprayed with roundup and valor. There was some small spots where there was no standing rye but only the residue from last years stubble which would be the in first picture where i found what i call the short plant. The second picture shows the standing rye cover where i found the tall plant. The third picture shows the two plants. I took a digital micrometer(sp) and measured the diameter of the stems of each plant, the short plant measured 1.85 mm and the tall plant measured 1.24 mm. Which plant do you think weighed the most? I will wait awhile to give the answer to that question to see if anybody wants to guess.
