NE Kansas | You could try something. Right click on the picture and choose Text Wrapping. Then chose one of the positions. Do not choose the picture in front of the words. Maybe what is happening is that the pictrures are covering up the words. Now this is using Word 2007. I think there is the same type of in Word 2003.
If you have Publisher use it. You have a lot more control over pictures and word files than does Word.
