I LOVE getting a tool that makes my life easier or more fun ~ favorites: a top-notch shop broom, an ice chipper, a sturdy wagon for lawn work ~ she wants a sewing machine, get her a sewing machine, but for goodness sake, let her do a little quilting before you hand over the mending!
by the way, how is this guy going to find a sewing machine at a garage sale this time of year?
I have a 30-year-old Viking that is a gem, but it is worn and has quirks I wouldn't push it onto anybody else ~ buyer-beware with used sewing machines - repair isn't cheap.
Buying clues from a retired Extension home economist:
Bernina and Viking are top of the line, walk on by new Singers
avoid sales pitch on all the stitches and fancy work it will do ~ basic is good
Still unnerved about buying one? ~ give her a gift certificate, not from a specific store, silly, from your checking account.
