That's what makes it such a deal in my mind. That is the exact call that ump is out in the field to make. It is his only thing to do. He doesn't have to watch multiple things, like calling strikes & see if the batter got hit. Or see if the ball was gloved & if a foot is on the bag. Those infield umps are busy, I can forgive a bad call, even if it is wrong.
But this - it was such a simple thing. And it wasn't on the line. It was a fair ball in 2 different ways - it touched the glove with the fielder well in play. And it landed well within the line in fair play.
How can that be missed by the line ump when he is standing right there with nothing else to judge, nothing blocking him?
Again, the Twins had ample chance to win that game, I won't blame the ump for the Twin's loss. But - it sure is a bad, bad, bad call. One wonders if he should be an ump if he messes up that call?
