Look around inside your case and see if there is a switch somewhere that is activated or inactivated when you remove/open the case. I know some Dell's have intrusion detection, but when this happens, you usually can get it started and go into the BIOS to reset it. If you have such a switch, look around to see if it activates properly. Also, if you have this switch, try booting with the case off, and see if you can get into the BIOS (be VERY careful about making any changes) and look around for Intrusion detection.

Is this the kind of case where you push a button and can open the case? If this is so, you might also want to see if it is shutting completely.

You might also look to see if the case is shorting against something when it closes. I know, tough to do if the case is closed, but look where the case might be and see if it might contact something that would short out your power supply.
