To each their own. Just yesterday, my great nephew asked my opinion of going from ground drive to electric drive. My opinion is that electric or hydraulic (we're short on SCV's) are probably alright, but I didn't see much advantage. I wouldn't vary the rate across the field anyway. We just put on new chains yesterday and plan on using ground drive again this year.

Now if I had purchased a planter that had hydraulic drive, I wouldn't remove it and go back to ground drive.


I have VRD and don't vary the rate. but....VRD runs the meters much smoother without all the chains and seed transmission, plus when you tell it to plant 32000 you get exactly that or 32500 or what ever and being able to just punch it in on the screen is so much handier. plus you don't have all the chains to maintain. I do agree with not getting a new planter just to have it but the actual variable rate part isn't the most important part of hydraulic drive.
