Ditto on the labs!! I have owned labs since 1985. I like dual purpose dogs and there are few of those around. Labs, Golden retrievers or Brittany Spaniels make great pets and they will still go hunt on a weekend. I feel the same about Australian Shepards (even though they can be high strung) who can be the best friend in the world and still go work stock.

My old hunting friend got ran over with the feed truck 4 years ago so I know what you are going through. Every time I hear "Henry" is coming with a load of feed I get nervous about the dogs. It wasn't all the drivers fault. My lab was nearly deaf, couldn't see very well, and had horrible arthritis in his hips. But he was my buddy and he still wanted to hunt. Everytime I loaded up the younger dog in the truck in the fall Chance would have a miraculous recovery and be bouncing around the yard like a new born pup. But I knew if I took him out he would be lying on the porch and moaning for days from the pain in his hips.

Good luck in your search.

I wouldn't wait until next year though unless you just want to. Go ahead and find yourselfs a decent dog or puppy. No home is complete without one.
