Local grain elevator had a fleet of trucks pulling hoppers back in the 80's - early 90's and some of them were 300hp 855 Cummins. At about the same time they also had some 300hp L10 Cummins. If I remember right as long as you didn't want to be the fastest truck on the road they were mostly 'adequate'.
In the early 80's I drove a 70's something Autocar that I was told had a 290 Cummins. I never quite figured out what motor it had - I assume it might have been a NHC series Cummins. I always thought it was an 855. It had a manual compression release on it, that I never saw on any other truck. Pulling a 42' reefer van, my right foot would suffer bad cramps from having my foot mashed to the floor so much - but it was a tough motor.
