Iowa | I load out of several old buildings. All of them have at least partial slats, but none would compare to a newer building. What works in one is not always a good idea in another.
When loading out of the 100+ year old barn for example, the pigs do not like to step outside and go up the chute. They will stop at the door, turn around, and almost fight to their death to get back to their pen. In that particular building I've found it best to handle them quietly until the get about 15 feet from the door and then make a lot of noise to scare them into running through the doorway and up the chute. They load very well that way. Being calm and giving them time to think about it results in a very hard day in that old barn.
