N. IL | Nobody that shows pigs has production hogs. Most of the families that showed cattle in the past now have some show pigs as well. Very competitive, excellent for the feed guys. Our county fairs are booming with show pigs while cattle numbers are declining. Very few livestock farms left, hobby for most. But it gives the 4-H experience to lots of kids. It takes a lot of work to be competitive along with money. Spent last 3 weeks with our kids at fairs, they love it. Not winning, but the work and the fun with other kids. I'll take it over club sports any day.
We eat and sell our show pigs at the end. We get $300 per pig sold carcass or while only $120 from Tyson. People love the old school purebred type meat. The Duroc or Berks are pretty good.
