Interesting responses so far! Nice to hear opinions of how people make it work. Seems like there are chopper people and bale people- each loves how they do it.

We have done both chopping our haylage and also wrapping certain cuts and found that we much prefer chopping.


It’s my opinion it takes the same amount of labor and fuel to get the feed to the bunk. Doesn’t matter if you bale or chop at the end of the line the feed you are putting in front of your cows takes the same amount of fuel, labor, wear and tear on equipment. So where do you want to spend it? Grinding up bales waiting on your wagon to mix it up for every load? Spending more fuel in the field chopping it? We prefer chopping and ‘front loading’ that work and think we can get it harvested more timely with better quality but we have the conversation about doing the same thing you are thinking about
