Frytown, Iowa | That’s a loaded question. I don’t have time for it (20 ac organic) now. It’s the starting and stopping. 20 ac is no different than 40. 100 ac. The time is in hooking/unhooking setting things up, size of equipment...
Cleaning out the planter stuff all takes time and if you have decent sized equipment 20 ac is not enough for all the starting and stopping.
I think XIX Ranch runs a few hundred ac organic largely done by himself. I’m not anywhere ready to commit any more (most fields are not as well hidden from the road as my current organic field)
Yes I am using the farm largely for experimenting with covers but this year I did full tillage corn. First time ive ever done a crop full tillage with cultivating and rotary hoeing... eye opener
Everything I do on that farm is new to me.
Fact is that $9 corn and $18 beans allow a LOT of mistakes. And when your crop looks good like my corn it really pays.
Hope my rented comes through too carrying its weight either through yield, price or both
