Madison Co. Virginia | If I understand correctly, this is the terminal end of a homemade extension cord. Nothing wrong with that, but you've got to find out if the problem is with the cord, or with the outlet that it's plugged in to.
Use a multi-meter, and check voltages at the source outlet. You should have 120v from the narrow blade(hot) to the third pin(ground), and from the narrow blade to the wide blade(neutral). There should be 0v between the wide blade and the third pin.
Plug the cord in a different outlet, and see if the problem still exists. Use a multi-meter to check for stray voltage around that metal box. Don't just rely on seeing sparks to know something is amiss when testing.
It's all pretty simple diagnostics if you understand how electricity works, and are comfortable using a multi-meter. | |
