nw NC | I'm dealing with sciatica nerve pain . Pain has been excruciating at times. Saw local doctor 2 weeks ago, got prescription pain med Hydrocodone /acetaminophen , a steroid Prednisone. They helped some but I believe Ibuprofen does as good or better. Go to bed in not very much pain but wake after a few hours in horrible pain that nothing ( heat, ice, massage, meds) seems to help with. Last week went to Emergency room had interview , exam and MRI done . Hospital contacted neurosurgeon on call and told him this guy is bad and needs you to see him ASAP. Contacted office Thursday morning and was told me he could see me SUNDAY ( WOW) . His office told me to get copy of MRI from hospital and come to office and fill out paper work to be ready for Sunday morning at office. Got to office and saw him Friday afternoon as he had just come in from surgery. ( Most specialists such as he, were booking into July for earliest available openings. Did I get lucky or what !!!!!!! )
He told me of options , Do nothing, live with it and possibly heal some on its own . Injections of steroids. works for some , does not for others. Surgery 95% success to be totally pain free afterward.
I told him of my small farming operation and everything needing done right now. He understood and said let him know my decision. After waking early Sunday morning and this morning in severe pain I will be calling first thing today to see how soon surgery can be scheduled. Hate to do it as wheat and ryegrass is ready for silo, corn needs planting, dry hay needs made, but I can't take this every night pain and little sleep, to heck with all the work, it will just have to wait.
Anyone else had surgery for sciatica? Care to tell me your experiences?
