Is it taking a lot longer than normal to fill the pressure tank? I think that might be an indication of a line leak or a well casing pipe issue. I am pretty sure that we have a check valve on the pump input side of the line but if there wasn't, it would be a good idea to install one or a manual valve (as suggested elsewhere) to help isolate the problem. Also, if your submersible has been pulled anytime in the last 15 years, the pipe has probably been replaced with plastic and would lessen the chances of a leak occuring there substantially.

We went through a similar situation in 1980, eventually replaced everything with black plastic. It's old now but no problems yet. If you know of an area where the line may run near a tile, that may be a place to start. Like others have said, it's really rare for them not to surface at some point. Given the age of your underground pipe, I wouldn't chase the leak too long. It is time for new piping.
