If you're using 6011 rods now (seems like the default choice), try some 7014 rods instead. They have a much smoother arc, higher fill rate, and the flux falls right off the weld.

Just don't buy 7018 rods since you need a rod oven to keep them in condition.

Edit: also if you're talking tube gates, it's going to hard to weld on them without burning through (they're pretty much sheet metal thickness), so use 3/32" rods so you can use a lower amperage.
