I used to scoff at the idea of writing checks on the computer. It turns out most of my checks were being written at my desk anyway. I modified my excel accounting spreadsheet to print checks and deposits. It also draws from a contact sheet to address envelopes in the same process. The bank balance and all the accounts are also updated in the same process as well as setting up the bank reconciliation form. I don't believe the computer check writing is any faster than doing it by hand, but having all the associated things done automatically is where it saves time. There is less opportunity for a mistake. The checks look neat, and people can read them. I once had a hand written check rejected because the bank could not read my writing.
