It's possible what Irwin was trying to suggest concerns next year's crop plans. He may have been merely pointing out that even with a modest price of $8.75 and a good yield you can make serious money with beans and that corn farmers might want to reconsider all that corn acreage next year.
But the fact is, if the national average really is anywhere near 50 bpa this year then somebody is cutting some 70 bpa beans somewhere. And if they happen to have sold those beans at $10 then they did as good or better than growing 200 bpa corn at $3-$3.25, especially when the additional costs are taken into account. |
