What is it you were actually delivering? It sure wasn't feeder calves.

Jim, in your cattle business, have you ever used or attempted to use a feeder or fat futures contract? I was delivering fat cattle. Over the period of 60 days my basis varied from -3 to +5 the April contract. I'd call that normal.

As almost every other other cow/calf producer, no I have never used feeder contracts.

As I said in my longer replies to dlerwick and KDD, I am speaking of feeder cattle futures only. It seems to me that fat/live cattle contracts are somewhere in the middle between corn/beans/jet fuel and feeder cattle contracts. I can see where they are of use to folks like you and Garvo.

My concern, as in the Drovers article, is the "dysfunctional" feeder cattle contracts. No need to repeat that discussion. I am not opposed to board futures where they are needed and functional.  Successful commodity futures share certain attributes, none of which are shared by the FEEDER cattle contract.
