North Central Iowa | I cut and baled some corn stalks where I had spread a rye/rape cover crop in August and it was green when i cut the stalks. It seemed that the cover crop kept the ground moist and when I baled the stalks the moist dirt and green cover made my bales tough and dirt would build up on my baler rolls. This winter the bales had white mold and stuck together and generally were not the best bedding and would definately not be able to sell them. So in the future I won't take any stalks from a field with a cover crops .
Edit: Some of it will depend on your location, temp and moisture situation. We had a nice warm dry fall then had some showers a week before I baled so we had plenty of growth and the rye cover held the moisture. If we had done it a week earlier we wouldn't of had any moist dirt on the baler rolls.
