Subject: RE: planter N

Southeast WI
Conventional till on good silt loams with only low risk of N loss unless really wet? I wouldnt mess with it either if thats your situation. Lot of good reasons why other guys do it already stated.

I do all the carrying of N and starter at planting to minimize trips - all NT or strip till here and I hate extra traffic. Variable soils here also so N is split as Jim suggested. Lower N rates overall are enough to maintain yields due to less chance of N losses from weather. When N is lost it pollutes. Some years it is just chasing a few extra or no extra bushels. Other years it is an extra 15-20. That is a here thing on our soils.
