Subject: RE: Early interseeded cover crops?

Vermont
UVM Extension interseeded about 2000 acres around northern Vermont this summer (late July and August) with a Hagie Highboy. 6-8 different mixes were used and for the most part we found ARG worked better than cereal rye. The clover did well. We live in Silage country and folks are pushing 40000 pop with 20 inch rows and other shade increasing variables(leafy varieties of corn). I believe the lack of sunlight contributed to the poor stands. Fields did green up much better in many circumstance better than we anticipated based on early field checks. We are trying to figure out if seeding earlier would be better around V4 or later. Much later and just incorporating after harvest will produce ok results. We are working to try to figure this out in these northern climates as water quality issues a a big deal around here and cover cropping seems to be one way to help improve it (long term). Next year we would like to focus on some different rates and maybe some simpler mixes. We flew drones over the cover cropped fields with a near infrared camera and are in the process of creating layer with the data from the raven to see what effect double planting and other field level conditions had on the cover crop. Looking for shade tolerate cover crop seed. I think that is the ticket to figuring some of this out. jeff
