Cut the stalks with your batwing, rake them up and bale, put 4 wraps of net wrap on. May need to dry a little, usually they do by combining them the stalk gets broke up enough to help with drying.
This is what we do. To answer, yes they will freeze to the ground. Last winter we had a terrible time with that, but most winters here it is not that bad.
