Nevada, Iowa | Ron - Sorry, I didn't read much of the replies, I get pretty selective on my reading anymore. For what it is worth, I have welded a half dozen or more chain hooks on loader buckets over the years and have literally beat the crap out of them, usually in a different application than what your wanting to do but I've yet to have one break or bend. Keep in mind that I wasn't strapping down my refinished classic tractor with them (I follow your posts and admire the restoration work you guys have done) but I have far exceeded any level headed usage several times but proceed at your own risk.
A plate that would extend slightly below the frame or casting just far enough to drill a hole that would accept a clevis ended chain hook like this - http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cmworks.com/images/i... - might work for you too. No welding on the hook with that set up. If it needs to lay the other way, you could make a T kind of strap. Just tossing out thoughts here. Good luck
