| yes it will help to break down the residue....long term. But in the short term, like planting the following spring, it will make your problem of cold wet soils worse. When the stalks and leaves get chopped they will make a blanket on the ground. Thus insulating the soil from sun and wind. Also, the chopped residue can tend to blow into drifts, so any areas that have their stalks run down will be blown clean by spring, and the leaves will be caught in the adjacent rows. I thought the same things when I bought my chopping head, but for no till in high residue corn it was an epic fail. IMO chopping corn heads are for those who chisel or strip till only. | |
