You are correct "spyware" is not what it used to be either. Those programmers are getting trickier all the time and now spyware is in stealth mode, rootkits, zero day attacks etc..

The key to this of course is preparedness. Number one rule is to create a "System Partition" where the operating system (O/S) and application software is installed to. You should have the O/S, Service packs and all software installations; including your security program installations stored on one or several disks.
 Then in the event of problems you only need to reformat the System Partition and then run the disks containing your junk and you're done; back in business.
