I've always thought it had to do with crap building up in the Registry, which I have thought for a long time that Windows needed rid of somehow. Each time you install a new application, crap gets added to the registry. It seems that Win computers that never have much software added and uninstalled from them do not seem to experience the slow-down - or at least not as bad.
