I want to get to 1 field cultivator pass and 1-2 light aggression passes like a tined tool and avoid taking the field cultivator out into mostly bare soil that a lighter tool could accomplish the objective. Over here the other considerations are after rock picking pass to take out wheel tracks to avoid weed flushes of lightly compacted tracks. And over here in fields near the lake we have higher humidity and more foggy mornings that an extra tip over of sods in sunshine get better termination in afternoon that prevent bottom side to dry out well. And some of the kettles can use something to bust the crust and open up the soil for field cultivator to be able to get through in a few days later.
Your comment that preplant tillage passed rarely reduce post emerge weeds is very wise. It took me a while realize that. Case in point, a local organic dairy farmer grew some great corn with several passes of tillage preplant for corn following 3-4 years of sod. Yes weed seed bank is reduced but he felt it needed those 4 spring passes and one could agree based on how good of corn he often produced. In reality he did a lot of recreational tillage and that was a false cause and effect.
