N FLA | What a difference a couple weeks makes. I guess my buys last week will prove to be the highest of the fall. I've convinced myself that shells are the best buying opportunity here. Mark Wright said dance with the girl that brung ya. I got fancy buying $1300 heavy bred last winter. But that was with plans to sell $1.10 slaughter cows and $1100 calves. Back to my fixer upper operation.
I got 6 yesterday. Nothing feed and dewormer can't turn around.
If you're wondering what the world I'm thinking.....I bought the 110 Hereford last September 650# for $495. I'm not exactly sure how much turnover I should have with cattle like this. I am so far keeping the ones that raise nice calves and breed back timely and have a good attitude. I suppose I could sell some of these fall calving pairs for $1600 now and buy back 4 shells. But I'm not sure I can feed that many or breed that many if I start doing that. I can put more money into winter grazing, but sometimes "less is more."
I'm open to suggestions. I wasn't planning to get cows bought for $380. I told myself if I can't sell these cows for more $/lb than I bought them for, the there are a lot of people with way bigger problems than me.
