| I have a stand of 40 year old planted loblolly pines. DNR forester said they should have been thinned 10 years ago to promote timber growth. We had an ice storm in the 90's that broke some of them up so they have grown back with forked tops or crooks and will never be good saw timber. Respected timber harvester has offered $2 per ton for pulp wood. A trailer load would be worth $40-50. I realize there is a lot of work harvesting a low value crop and this is at the top end of what the forester told me to expect. My question is would there be any value in killing the trees in place by girdling or injecting them and allowing the nutrients to return to the soil. I know it would be added labor and cost but I'd never sell a crop or residue for $2 per ton. | |
