Subject: Planting corn in green oats

The thread from two days ago headed in several directions, so here we go again.

In a conversation with Mike Plumer, he said that fusarium could be a problem with corn planted in green oats and wheat. Several types of fusarium, most are hosted by both oats and wheat. One of those things that seem to attack the plant from seedling through early maturity, sapping the gravy out of the deal. Timely N helps but cannot cure the problem.

I will have several acres with oats as part of a mix, so I will kill them at least two weeks before planting. If I have legumes, I will plant them green.

For those of you that have never used a spring planted cover, the window of opportunity is shorter than fall planted. Economics are such that cheap is good, left over seed from intended fall seeding is even better. Expectations should be low, although feeding the critters and protecting from that May deluge is always a good thing.

Killing a cover too early is much better than waiting too late and paying a yield loss penalty.
