Subject: Cows won't eat hay

I'm baffled, I chopped hay last week for mid gestation cows and the ratio was 3 bales 1 year old grass hay and 1 bale of 1 year old alfalfa.

I've feed a lot of different stuff throughout the years including a lot of straw and never had problems. The grass hay bales, besides the outside not looking very good for 1st 2 inches or so. The hay looks good. I've been top dressing it with a few pails if ground corn to get them started.

The grass hay was put up late in the year and was rough terrain with lots of rocks so only way was with sickle mower and take it, so it does have some dust...but even though it wasn't cut for years there was a lot of dry matter out there and some green but I know and I have fed worse hay....and it wasn't overly weedy or full of thistles like some CRP that some cut and feed.

This is the 3rd day it's been put in front of them and they really haven't ate much at all. Put it out they sniff and put their nose into it and bellar. Why is this? Just not happy being it's lower quality grass hay compared to the nice green stuff they got when I first brought them home with the calves on them? Any ideas what to do?
