Subject: Freezer Beef Help

LaCrosse, IN
Looking for some advice here. I found a small barn and pasture to use so I'm looking to finish just 3-4 calves a year. I'd like to get the calves as small as possible but weaned so I don't have such a large upfront cost. So first question, I cant find anything fairly local under 400# and not much cheaper than $3/lb, so is that just the going rate or am I not looking in the right places? Should I be looking for a certain breed for freezer beef (Angus, Hereford, Cross, etc)? I realize this is probably the worst time to get in considering feeder calf prices across the country but hey opportunity is knocking. Again, small operation looking for some advice from the pros.
