It would help if we knew your location. Prices are high right now,even higher for the lighter weight calves so expect to pay for them. For no more than three or four head if you have a local cow/calf producer you trust close by I'd just see if he'd sell you three or four steers after they've been weaned. Less stress of buying them through auction that way. As far as the type of cattle,any kind will work. What kind of feed you have access to will make a difference though,dairy cross or dairy breed calves will need the corn poured to them. As to the beef calves,the bigger Continental types and crosses will take more feed to finish out and will finish at a heavier weight than the English breeds. A Hereford/Angus cross calf is tough to beat in my mind as far as being mostly bombproof carcass quality wise and a nice size finish and hanging weight when all is said and done. Hope that helps!
