Subject: Narrow rows and down corn?

East Central Ia
This is our fifth year on 20" rows and we have been happy so far...

But this year we had a lot of down corn! It seems way more than my neighbors did.

We still have a couple hundred acres to go and we have had a lot of wind the last few days. Had a storm blow through with 50-60mph winds, and the next few days with gusts 30-40mph.

Of the little corn left around here it seems the 30" rows handled the wind much better then our 20" rows.

I would not say we had any more down corn the last few years then the guys on 30" rows but this year seems different.

We have been fighting it hard for about 2/3 of our acres. We got a wind storm on Oct 12 that started it and it's snowballed from there.

I will need to check machine hours but most of the last couple weeks I would say we have been at most 30-40% of our normal productivity.

Having to only run during the day light hours is killing us this late in the year.

I need to have a sit down with my agronomist, but if the narrow rows are the culprit here I'll be switching back to 30"... I am NOT doing this crap again!
