While entering our second drought year in a row, I’ve been trying to sell my yearlings that normally go to grass. Traditionally, I sell them mid to late summer off of grass. Boy, what a year to try to move them early.

All in the past hour, I cancelled trucks destined for sale barn, and rejected a private treaty offer that I didn’t figure would pay the bills for a year.

Seems like every time I’ve sold in desperation, I’ve regretted it.

Well, there’s a little old grass to make it a few weeks and some slight chances of rain over the weekend. I guess I’ll prolong the anxiety a bit longer.

And yes, it might even get uglier

Not sure what you mean.

I gotta get more control of weather and markets?

Right on

It feels good to vent to cattlemen that have been in the same boat before. That’s all

Really. That’s 30 miles from my house, Out here, that’s next door.

I’m sure I would know the owner as well as the order buyer. This is one big small community up here,

I’m 20 miles due north of Kirby, just over the little wolf mountains, and the sarpies.

Looked up th report at faith, I thought they got along extremely well. Heifers pairs slip below $1500 I’m buying a load or two. 1750+ is a good ticket.... given the price of feed.

I agree on the faith report. I looked this morning and didn't think it was bad at all. Now with maybe some moisture next weekend there will be more optimism out there in the west.

$1750 is an absolute kick in the nuts , we already paid all expenses n feed to raise a $1000 dollar calf. They will be a **** ton of lost equity up here .

I agree with the first part of expenses. Not sure about the $1000 calves part. I would sell mine this fall for that if anyone is offering. The fat cattle market is brutal right now. Too much production they keep telling us as the packers are actually slowing chain speeds with choice cutout at $300/cwt. No collusion taking place. Back in the day the pack would have added a Sunday shift of the profits were a 1/4 of what they are now.

We decided to pull the trigger and sell 3 more loads. Pastures have some old grass but not looking promising for much new grass and anything without a well won’t have water. Now able to run the cows at almost 50% normal stocking rate, hopefully that helps. None of this is part of the plan but I guess I’m just going to roll with the punches. But hey I would never have kept the corn in the bin this long if I wasn’t going to use it to finish calves so I’m telling myself the cattle helped me pick up a $1.65/bushel. Good luck out there forecasts are trending for Montana to start getting moisture.
