Subject: Ideas on removal of this chain hoist

coast of Maine
This electric chain hoist is 40 ft off this old barn floor. It still works as I tried a while back with an extension cord. There is zero chance of a lift as main floor wooden and door way down at 10ft.Want to take it down and put it in the shop on a trolley.I have zero idea how my grandfather put it up back in the 50 s.Was used to run an elevator that hauled grain /grit up and eggs down in this old barn way back.As kids we would snag a ride,,about as safe as any stupid thing we did.I can get with ladder I think but no way to insure safety as I unbolt that from its chain..If it works after idle for 40 years am I dumb to assume it will work well in the shop and just leave it?I think it was a multi ton capacity maybe 2.
