Subject: Putting out hay today

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I was reminded of one of the reasons we do what we do. Snow coming tomorrow but cows calves and bulls seemed to have weathered the cold in good shape using the woods for shelter. The heifer calf in first pic was born in early Sept after the regular July vet visit and eartagging. She came right up to me on her own while Mom is eating fresh hay.

A couple late calves are one of the issues with leaving the bulls in until March. However with the cold this year it has been much simpler to leave the bulls in and manage 2 groups instead of 3 or 4. A couple long yearlings to harvest over the winter may not be all bad giving me something to process in the winter. Retained heifers will get lute shots when I pull the bulls when the weather warms. Calving is scheduled to start May 1.

The last pic is a nice mother/steer son pair. This steer was calved in early May and typical of what I’m looking for. My new more terminal bull should produce more of these.
