I was catching possums in the barn. Got a skunk today. If I let him set a day or two, will be be less likely to spray. Not in a handy place to cover with a blanket. I didn't want to mess with him before church. Not very bad when I get back either.

How small is the trap? If it can't lift it's tail it can't spray.

It'll spray just as easy even if it was in there a week. Cover with blanket, expect to get sprayed. lol

Cover him with a blanket, sing him a song to keep him calm (no lie, that is what my neighbor said to do, but then again, my neighbor jerks my chain occasionally), you won't get sprayed. I am three for three, safely, but have also decided to quit while ahead. Good Luck. bruce

I’m 2 for 2. Be calm. I generally have someone stand on the far end of the trap being a bit more animated. Have a 4x4 ready. Lift the trap door just enough to get the 4x4 under it to wedge it open, and run like hell!

boys caught a double skunk surprise this week. They ended up popping them with the .22. The trap was outside though, and away from the yard.

Hope you have a rope tied to the trap, but it can be done after covering trap with plastic or tarp. Then, after church, baptize the skunk while in the trap. Use the rope to retrieve trap after 30 minutes.

I have caught several around our Baptist church. I have used the road ditch when caught after a large rain but the ceremony has been performed in the trash can a few times. It might be interesting to watch some from other denominations sprinkling though. Had one get it's head caught in a small hole in the base of the central air unit. There wasn't a safe way to dispatch with a gun. I am sure I had a strong odor following me around after that.

I’ve had 3 take up residence on my back porch just this week. Have found that a water hose is pretty effective in getting them to leave. So far it has worked on all three, haven’t got sprayed yet. Apparently they’ve been sharing food with the dog. The dog absolutely lives them alone and skunks will walk right by the dog. Skunks won’t be back, got them far enough away from the house and they met their maker. Lots of skunks in the area right now, dead ones every few miles on highway.

Your skunks must be able to hold their breath longer than mine, lol. Mine only last about 2 minutes under water.

I remember catching a skunk in a live coon trap a few years back. With a lot of patience I was able to release the skunk to freedom with no harm done and no spray either. Maybe just lucky. We didn't have many skunks around at the time and I didn't want to kill it.

It'll die eventually. I caught one yesterday in my pet friendly racoon trap.

Sometimes they're more calm in the live trap when its getting close to dusk. I try to not agitate the skunk, just slowly get close enough to shoot it with the 22. But once you shoot it, you better be ready to grab the trap and take it to where you want to dump out the skunk because once its dead it will relax its muscles in minutes and will stink. I bait a live trap with some marshmallows. I used to use cat food, but would catch a cat once in a while.

I've often wondered about putting trapped skunk to sleep by leaving a propane weed burner valve open up close to it and asphyxiating it.
But when it does die, I'm about sure it will lose muscle control and drain its scent glands anyway.

Lots of good hints. My experience was carry a tarp big enough to hide behind, drop over the trap and gently carry to where you want it. I had an open mowed spot that I set him down on, then opened the trap. I had to lift the car end of the trap for encouragement and he finally came out. He never did spray. Another was in a spot that I didn’t care if it smelled so I shot him with a 22. He did stink.

I've used an old tarp or piece of ag bag plastic, best is with a solid door trap and come from that end and gently cover it, they will let off a whiff of something but not full strength spray. Was able to pick up and move the trap to a 55 gallon barrel full of water, less stench that way.

I have never shot one in a trap don't plan to either.
