Each member of our family has a gmail account.  It's easy to get and setup.  Once you have it if you have a computer with a microphone and a camera you can do "hangouts".  We have a pretty slow connection and still manage to talk to people pretty much like they show on TV.  
If you have a smart phone you can do hangouts using it because it has a camera and a microphone.  It has the advantage of mobility too.

Good luck and don't take the attitude that you can't do it.  People on here are generally very intelligent and adaptable, sometimes people just need to be made aware of something not in their normal field.
