OK, we've got a few older GM cars, bought used, and of course you only get one set of keys with most of the time. Is there any "cheap" way to get a copy made of the computer chipped ignition key? Local dealer says they can't even make copies, and places that do get around $80. Any way to get by for less? Thanks.

$80 is cheap for a chipped key.

Add a resistor that equals the one in your key and you can do away with the chip key. Do a google search on it and you should find several sites that explain it fairly well. The hardest part was finding the exact wire to add the resistor to. Found one site that showed that, in pictures, so that helped. Once installed, you can make a normal key copy without the expensive resistor key.

You can get the keys pretty cheap on ebay if you can find someone that will make it work with your ignition. I thought the dealer can. I've had the ford ones done a few times. Bought them for about 8 dollars and had the ford dealer program them for me. Sometimes in the owners manual you can program them yourself. this key is item number 290288293841 on ebay at a $14.96 buy it now price.

If your dealer cannot cut you a new key, then you need a new dealer. The dealer I work at stocks all the different keys and can cut them several different ways.. The cost of the keys have even come down in recent months and the older pass key blanks are around 30.00.

Just went through this same deal. I bought two separate chipped keys off of Ebay. Got them both for less than $30 each with shipping, one came with another fob for one of vehicles. Dealer cut them for nothing as we had two key fobs programmed too. Once cut you can program them yourself in 10seconds. Pretty simple. Mine are GM vehicles.

My GM dealer will staple the key code to the owners manual of all new vehicles, at least they do for me. Might be family history.

Sure wish I coulg a new key cut and programmed for $80 for my Honda Ridgeline, Dealer quoted me $175 for the remote key and I think it was $125 for a Valet key, I have seen them on Ebay cheaper but still need to have it cut and it takes a special cutter for these keys.
