Subject: caterpillars eating the beans

East Central Nebraska
Anyone got caterpillar problems in the soybeans. Mine are good, but looked at a friend's field about 5 miles away yesterday. Holy smokes. Caterpillars are everywhere eating on the plants. Field of 160 acres is turning brown. Caterpillars look similar to a cut worm. they will cocoon soon and turn into a moth or something. He was told these moths can relay eggs and another hatch of caterpillars could be coming to his field or nearby in a month or so. He is getting ready to post like today, so he is going to add a bug killer in there to get them. Neighboring fields have them too from the looks from the road. Heard of other areas having problems and spraying. Probably walking 10 ft, I seen maybe 30/40 caterpillars. They are eating the leaves like crazy, but good regrowth on the beans eaten already. Another guy was told that these have run their course and not worth spraying. In places, it looks like a hail storm came thru. They seem to like the 1st planted beans which for this guy was the 1st week in May.
