Subject: RE: Yellow Pea Growers

Bow Island, Alberta
I've grown peas for 30 years. I prefer peas with a better rating for standability since this reduces harvest issues. Even with peas that usually stand well, it doesn't take much of a storm late in the season for them to go down. So you should roll your field in case you have to cut right on the ground.

Depending on harvest conditions of your peas, you probably need a pea auger if you are using a draper header. Auger headers have less feeding issues.

Here's a photo of an irrigated pea field last fall that didn't get any wind or rain. We were leaving at least a foot of stubble in most areas. But some years, the whole field is less than a foot tall at harvest.
